10 essential oil life hacks you'll love

Essential oils aren't just good for meditating and relaxing... they're also an amazing practical help around the home.  Swap a few chemicals for these low tox, natural alternatives - we promise you won't look back.

1. Rubbish bin smells

This simple swap is a no-brainer. Bin those commercial air fresheners…. they may kill germs, but so does Eucalyptus Oil Spray, and without the harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances.  100% pure eucalyptus or tea tree sprays are terrific bin odour busters – keep a can near each bin and toilet in the house and enjoy a fresher, healthier household immediately.

Extra tip:  Pop a cotton wool ball soaked in tea tree oil at the bottom of each bin, underneath the bin liner.  It’ll help continually freshen and lasts ages.

 2. Fresh fridge

Things can get stinky in the fridge… pop in an open box of baking soda (it neutralises odours) but first add a few drops of eucalyptus or tea tree oil to super-charge the effect.

3. Shoes & school bags

If your shoe closet makes you almost reel over or you keep finding manky banana skins in school bags, essential oils are your best friend. Pop some oil on a damp cloth to wipe out bags (keep a bottle handy under the kitchen sink for this kind of thing).  Spray shoes and bags regularly with eucalyptus or tea tree spray – tea tree is also a natural antifungal, so it’s great for sports shoes and gym equipment, too.

4. Lavender for lovely locks
Add a few drops of lavender oil to your normal shampoo to help increase circulation to the scalp and encourage healthy hair growth.

5. Be floored by freshness

Adding 2-3 capfuls of eucalyrptus oil to your mop bucket is amazing - it adds both cleaning power and freshness to your mopping.  You can also use a Eucalyptus Solution if preferred, or add the oil as a booster in your mop bucket while still using your favourite floor cleaner.  You'll find the addition of eucalyptus is particularly good for scuff marks and 'sticky bits' on your floors.  And who doesn't want a home that smells like a walk in the bush?

6. Laundry boost

Another place you should definitely stash essential oils, is in the laundry. If you’ve never tried eucalyptus for freshening laundry, you’re missing out – and it only takes seconds.  Add 2 capfuls (or more, if desired) to the final rinse for stinky socks, nappies, work gear, pet bedding, towels or linen.  It’ll kill germs, get rid of nasty odours and leave a fresh, bushland aroma throughout your whole wash.  Eucalyptus or Tea Tree Solution is also terrific, and is a water soluble option.

You can also pop some essential oil onto a facewasher or piece of muslin, and throw it in the dryer with your towels while they’re drying – mmmm!

7. Musty mattresses begone

Incorporate this little ritual into your routine. When you strip the family’s beds to change the sheets, give mattresses and pillows a thorough spray with Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray before putting fresh linen back on.  Not only does it smell amazing, it will neutralise any odours and as an added bonus, kills dust mites (yes really!).

8. Refresh carpets

Add lavender, eucalyptus or tea tree oil to baking soda and sprinkle the mixture onto your carpet or upholstery. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes then vacuum up.  This is particularly good for pet or toddler ‘accidents’.

9. Swish sink

Keep a small bottle of eucalyptus oil on your kitchen sink and use a few drops when you wipe it down – not only will it help disinfect your sink, it’ll also keep your dishcloths smelling fresher for longer.

10. Morning wakeup call

Struggling to open your eyes in the morning? Eucalyptus oil is renowned for its revitalising effect. Pop some oil or Spray on a facewash and leave it at the base of a hot shower – the oils will vaporise in the steam, creating a eucalyptus sauna effect that will clear your head and perk you up instantly.

Always read the label.  Follow the directions for use.  If symptoms persist, talk to your healthcare professional.
