10 Essential Oils Life Hacks

Essential oils aren't just good for meditating and relaxing... they're also an amazing practical help around the home.  Swap a few of your usual products for these alternatives - we promise you won't look back.

1. Bin that air freshener

Commercial air fresheners may mask odours, but so can some Essential Oils, and without the synthetic fragrances.  Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray is a terrific odour buster – keep a can near each bin and toilet in the house and enjoy a fresher home.

2. Upgrade your Hand Wash

If you’ve been using the same hand wash for forever, there’s no time like now to upgrade.   As we’re all washing our hands multiple times a day, it’s an occasion well worth building a little luxury into.

There are so many lovely hand and body washes which contain pure Essential Oils and are enriched with botanical extracts, such as Bosisto’s Australian Natives range.

Mindfulness tip: After washing your hands with a pure essential oil hand wash, cup your hands up to your face and inhale deeply – in for a few seconds, out for a few seconds.  A deep, conscious breath is a great stress-reliever.

3. Freshen the fridge

Things can get stinky in the fridge… Essential Oils to the rescue.   Pop in an open container of baking soda (it neutralises odours) but first add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to super-charge the effect.

4. Stop shoe smells

If your shoe closet makes you almost reel over, Essential Oils are your best friend. Pop some eucalyptus oil on a cotton ball and place inside shoes.  Or spray inside them regularly with Bosisto’s Eucalyptus or Bosisto’s Tea Tree Spray – tea tree is also a natural antifungal, so it’s great for sports shoes, gym bags and gym equipment, too.

5. Be floored by freshness

Adding Essential Oils to your mop bucket is amazing - it brings both cleaning power and freshness to your mopping.

We love Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Solution which is water-soluble; or you can add pure Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil (see labels for how to use).  You'll find the addition of eucalyptus is particularly good for scuff marks and 'sticky bits' on your floors.  And who doesn't want a home that smells like a walk in the bush?

6. Laundry boost

Another place you should definitely stash Essential Oils is in the laundry. If you’ve never tried eucalyptus for freshening laundry, you’re missing out – and it only takes seconds.  Add 2-3 capfuls of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil to the final rinse for stinky socks, nappies, work gear, pet bedding, towels or linen.  It’ll help get rid of nasty odours and leave a fresh, bushland aroma throughout your whole wash.

You can also pop some Essential Oils (we love lavender) onto a facewasher and throw it in the dryer with your towels while they’re drying – mmmm!

7. Musty mattresses begone

Incorporate this little ritual into your routine. When you strip the family’s beds to change the sheets, give mattresses and pillows a thorough spray with Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray and let it air for 20-30 minutes before putting fresh linen back on.  Not only does it smell amazing, it will help neutralise odours.

8. Refresh carpets

Add a few drops of Essential Oils like Eucalyptus or Lavender to baking soda, and sprinkle the mixture onto your carpet or upholstery. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes then vacuum up.

9. Swish sink

Keep a small bottle of Eucalyptus Oil on your kitchen sink and use a few drops on your cloth when you wipe it down – not only will it help clean your sink, it’ll also keep your dishcloths smelling fresher for longer.

10. Morning wakeup call

Struggling to open your eyes in the morning? Eucalyptus Oil is renowned for its revitalising effect. Pop some oil or Spray on a facewasher and leave it at the base of a hot shower – the Essential Oils will vaporise in the steam, creating a eucalyptus sauna effect that will clear your head and perk you up instantly.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

When using essential oils on fabrics or surfaces, spot test a small area first.
