4 Natural Cleaning Product Swaps to Try

Natural product swaps that are easy, affordable, and actually clean? Yes it’s possible.

Cleaning products are a staple on most shopping lists - and if you’re trying to move towards a healthier, low-tox lifestyle it’s one of the key areas to change that will have a big impact.

Many conventional cleaners contain artificial fragrances and harsh chemicals which aren’t great for our family or the environment. But with a few clever natural cleaning substitutes, you can clean your home in a greener way. Here are our favourites:

1. From toilet cleaners to… bicarb soda

As far as natural cleaning goes, bicarb soda is one of the most versatile staples out there. You can clean your washing machine with it (see how, here), deodorise your carpets before vacuuming, and even brighten whites in your laundry.

But one of our favourite uses is as a toilet cleaner. Just add ½ cup bicarb soda to the toilet, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then add ½ cup white vinegar and 2 capfuls of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Solution. As the mixture foams, scrub vigorously and flush clean. For extra freshness in between cleans, pop a few capfuls of Eucalyptus Solution in after flushing.

2. From harsh surface sprays to… Bosisto’s Multipurpose

Here’s an easy natural product swap to get behind: Bosisto’s Multipurpose Spray is 100% Aussie made & owned all-purpose spray which is free from harsh additives – containing pure eucalyptus oil from our farm in Inglewood, Victoria.

Unlike some formulas with harsh ingredients, this product is food prep safe – so it’s great for kitchen bench cleaning, with no nasties to rinse off.

And here’s the kicker - it really works. In fact it’s CHOICE Recommended, rated above 40+ other brands in the recent 2023 survey. Folks, this one’s a no-brainer!

3. From Dishwasher cleaners to… Lemon juice

What’s in those blue bottles of Dishwasher cleaner? We don’t know, but it certainly doesn’t look very natural!

We love this simple hack for keeping your dishwasher clean instead. Place a cup of lemon juice in your dishwasher's top rack or basket and run a normal cycle. The acidic lemon juice will work to remove hard water spots and iron buildup.

Do a lemon juice clean once a month and tackle smudges and splatters on the exterior as they happen with Bosisto’s Multipurpose Spray (did we mention it’s also great on stainless steel?).

4. From harsh floor cleaners to… a Eucalyptus-based option

Are we noticing a eucalyptus trend here? That might be because, as natural cleaning products go, it’s the BEST!

Floors are another area where eucalyptus oil literally shines. Eucalyptus oil is a natural antibacterial, and you’ll find it in Bosisto’s Floor Cleaner. This is a low-tox home’s secret weapon because it’s great for all surfaces, without leaving behind harmful chemicals.

You won’t find any bleach, ammonia, chlorine, phosphates, sulphates or artificial fragrances, and its plant-based formula is also suitable for grey water systems. Not to mention your floors will smell incredible!

Another great tip for before you mop? Give any particularly sticky or grubby areas a quick pre-spray with your Bosisto’s Multipurpose and let it do its work for 10 minutes while you prepare your mop bucket.

Who said it wasn’t easy to be green?
