Want to make a more natural eucalyptus oil wool wash at home? It’s easier than you think.

With winter just around the corner many of us have started pulling out those cozy jumpers, blankets and throws.

Keeping woolen and delicate items in top condition requires a little bit of TLC, but it’s well worth it.  Using the correct water temperature, wash cycle and products can considerably extend their lifespan, keeping them soft, fluffy and wearable for years to come.

We love our Bosisto’s Wool & Delicates Wash, but if you’re feeling the urge to DIY, you can easily make your own Wool Wash at home using natural Eucalyptus Oil.

Here's our famous Wool Wash recipe.

How to DIY Wool & Delicates Wash

You'll need:
Pure soap flakes ½ packet (300g)
Methylated spirits 1 cup (200mL)
Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil  - 1 small bottle (50mL)*

1. In a clean wide-neck jar with a lid (like a coffee jar), mix methylated spirits with soap flakes.
2. Add Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil and shake.

How to use:
Use one tablespoon of mixture per garment – dissolve in a small quantity of hot water then pour into machine on a wool cycle, or hand wash in lukewarm water. Rinse white garments to prevent yellowing.

How to dry your woollens & delicates: Squeeze and roll in a towel to remove excess water before allowing to dry (flat if possible) and out of direct sunlight.

Why Eucalyptus Oil?

Eucalyptus oil is used in many Wool Wash & Delicates formulas, for good reason. It’s freshening and deodorising (handy for delicates like undergarments and stockings), but what makes it really essential in a Wool Wash is its unique ability as a natural cleaner.

Wool is a natural fibre and over time and with use, can absorb oils and fats. Eucalyptus oil is a natural solvent that acts as a mild surfactant that is pH neutral, to help remove these oils and fats while not damaging the natural fibres of the wool.

Eucalyptus oil is also especially good for woollens which have been kept in storage, and prone to developing musty odours over time.

It leaves a beautifully fresh and crisp aroma that really lasts. Your woolens will feel soft and smell divine - a treat for the senses every time you wear them.

More tips for washing wool & delicates

• Spot clean small stains by blotting with water and mild soap.

• Try to air out wool jumpers after each wear.

• If machine washing, use the wool setting (usually gentle action at 40°C). If your washing machine does not have a wool cycle, use the cold water wash or wash cycle for delicates.

• Turn garments inside out first, or place in a laundry bag.

• Never hang wool jumpers on coat hangers. Ideally, fold them in wooden drawers.

• Never use the dryer as they can shrink!
