Does your Wheelie bin smell like a tip?  Here's how Eucalyptus Essential Oil can help take it from funky to fresh in a few easy steps.  Bring on bin night…

Why clean your wheelie bin?
The obvious one is because it smells; that’s just not pleasant, especially if your bins are somewhere you walk past frequently. Summer’s here and in warmer months especially, the aroma can go into overdrive. Plus, food scraps in and around your wheelie bin make it a magnet for flies, which nobody needs around their back door.  Need we say more.

Why Eucalyptus Essential Oil?
If you’ve battled to reduce the odour from your wheelie bins only to find that water, detergent and even commercial air fresheners are no match – it’s time to add one really big gun your arsenal. Eucalyptus essential oil.

Eucalyptus essential oil has the natural ability to lift sticky substances, which is a big plus when dealing with stuff that stays inside bins after emptying. It has antibacterial properties too. But the biggest benefit is the aroma. Natural and long-lasting, it leaves a lingering freshness that beats synthetic fragrances hands down.

How often should you clean it?
You can get away with doing a Eucalyptus essential oil deep clean once a month, as long as you’re also washing it out with a pressure hose in the weeks in between. But really, you can do this as often as you like – every week after bin night, ideally!

We like to use Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Solution for bins because it mixes easily with water, however you can use Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Essential Oil if preferred.

Wheelie bin deep clean – Here’s how.

1. Pour 100mL of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Solution, OR 25mL of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil plus ¼ cup eco-friendly dishwashing detergent into your empty bin.

2. Quarter fill the bin with water. Garden hose water is usually fine, but if it’s your first clean in a while or there’s lots of caked-on rubbish at the bottom, use 4 kettles full of boiling water instead.

3. Leave sit with the lid closed for 30 minutes.

4. While it’s sitting, spray the outside surfaces and bin lid with Bosisto’s Multipurpose Spray, or Eucalyptus Solution made up into a spray (see label directions).

5. Using an old broom and scrubbing brush, scrub all the inside and outside surfaces of the bin.  Drain, and rinse well. A pressure hose really comes in handy for this purpose.

6. Leave upside down until fully dry.

Tips to keep your wheelie bin cleaner, for longer

  • Put a layer of paper towel in the base to soak up liquids
  • Slow down waste composition by keeping your wheelie bin out of direct sunlight
  • Put waste in your compost if possible instead
  • Use an extra (biodegradable) bin liner for kitchen food waste

Don’t forget the Maintenance!
Now your bin is fresh, try and keep it that way. In between cleans, give the lid a quick wipe with Bosisto’s Multipurpose Spray. Kill germs and keep it smelling fresh with a daily spray of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray.
