From Leaf to Bottle: Inside Bosisto’s NEW Eucalyptus Oil Distillery

Discover how Bosisto’s new eucalyptus oil distillery in regional Victoria transforms Blue Mallee leaves into 100% pure Australian eucalyptus oil — with sustainability at its heart.

For more than 170 years, Bosisto’s has been bringing the natural power of eucalyptus into Aussie homes. Now, we’re building on that legacy with the opening of our brand-new eucalyptus oil distillery in regional Victoria.

Set among our Blue Mallee (Eucalyptus polybractea) plantations near Inglewood, Victoria, the new distillery is where nature and innovation come together.

Mallee magic

The perfect eucalyptus oil starts with the perfect leaves.  Blue Mallee oil is known for its unique cleaning and deodorising properties (one reason our laundry and cleaning products are so effective... they’re made with 100% pure oil from our farm!).

Mallees are hardy and strong.  They’re harvested on a rotational basis every 2-3 years and they regrow naturally after harvest, making them a renewable and sustainable resource. They’re also grown without pesticides or fertilisers…. just the natural elements of sun, soil and rain.

In total there are nearly 5 million trees in Bosisto’s plantations, over 1500 hectares.  That’s the size of 750 MCG’s!

Distilling it down

Inside the distillery, the eucalyptus leaves are transformed using steam - a process that gently extracts the oil. It’s a method that hasn’t changed much in principle since the early days of ‘Eucy’ production, although the new distillery has automated many of the processes.

Bosisto's new eucalyptus oil distillery is purpose-built to do more - and do it better. It will increase our production capacity by up to 300%, helping ensure a reliable supply of Australian-made eucalyptus oil for years to come.

Farmed with care

But just as importantly, it’s been designed with sustainability at its heart.

The site runs on a hybrid off-grid system powered by more than 2,000 solar panels. Water used in the distillation process is captured, filtered and reused in a closed-loop system. Even the leftover leaf waste finds a second life - powering the boiler or returning to the plantation as mulch to support soil health.

It’s a thoughtful, circular approach that reflects our genuine respect for the land, and using what nature gives us, responsibly.

Exciting future

For Bosisto’s, the opening of the new distillery marks an exciting new chapter in a story that began more than 170 years ago.

Henry Minson and Tegan Abbott - part of the founding family behind Bosisto’s and helping lead the business into its next generation - see the investment as an important step in protecting the future of Australian-made eucalyptus oil while staying true to the values the brand was built on.

“This is an exciting day in the history of Bosisto’s. As an Australian, family-owned business, we’re incredibly proud to make this investment to strengthen production capabilities for Australian eucalyptus oil and provide a platform for sustainable growth,” Henry said.

“We have been drawing on the natural qualities of eucalyptus oil since 1852. It’s incredibly versatile, from being a powerful antiseptic to a wonderful cleaner with a refreshing aroma people love. We’re proud to produce this amazing product in Australia.”

The opening of our new distillery is also a boost for the local community, supporting regional jobs, suppliers and long-term growth in Australian manufacturing.

Most importantly, it means we can keep doing what we’ve always done: bringing naturally effective, Australian-made products into your home.
