From blah to spa: savvy ways to upgrade your shower
Unless you’re a die-hard hippie, you’ll spend about 6,000 hours in the shower during your lifetime. That’s about the same amount of time it would take you to run 1,200 marathons!
Since you’re going to spend so much quality time in there, why not upgrade the experience a bit? Here are five improvements you can make in just a few minutes.
- Take the pressure up!
If your current shower head used to be awesome but hasn’t quite had the same water pressure lately, there’s an easy solution. Restore it to its original glory with an overnight soak, which will extract build-up caused by mineral deposits. All you need is a plastic bag, vinegar, baking soda and a rubber band – and follow the instructions here: https://brightnest.com/todos/unclog-your-showerhead. Prepare for an epic power shower!
Quick Tip: to supercharge your morning shower even more, spray Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray into the corners of the shower (not at the base, where it’ll get slippery) or add a few drops of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil to a facewasher and place near your feet. The hot water will vaporise the eucalyptus oil, creating an aromatic, invigorating wakeup call to start the day.
- Showerhead swap
Sometimes, even the deepest clean isn’t enough to fix things. If your showerhead is truly over-the-hill, treat yourself to a replacement. In some states in Australia you can swap your old shower head for a new, energy-efficient 3 star shower head under the government’s Showerhead Exchange program http://yourenergysavings.gov.au/rebates/showerhead-exchange-vic - contact your local water corporation to see if you’re eligible.
- Create a tropical paradise
Add some life to your bathroom with plants! There’s a good reason day spas and resorts have lots of greenery about. They’ll detox the air and promote a feeling of tranquillity - what better way to start the day? Place some potted bamboo on your windowsill (it’s also great Feng Shui), a hanging pot plant or fern over the bathtub, little succulents in tiny terracotta pots on the bathroom vanity or shelving. If there’s room, a standing plant can even go in the corner.
- Buy a new curtain
If you have an older-style bath with a shower curtain, you have a unique opportunity to really add personality to your bathroom.
Try online stores such as Zoxoro Australia, Fishpond.com.au and Amazon.
- Get organised
His and Hers shower caddies can be as life-changing (and relationship-saving) as separate closets. Keep bath products organised by designating separate areas of the shower for each person, or invest in a double-sized caddy. If you’re the sole shower inhabitant, it’s still a good idea to buy a new shower caddy every year or so, as it can really make a huge difference and uplift the look and feel of your shower.
Freedom and Ikea have a great selection of caddies, or try online at Crazysales.com.au (search ‘Umbra’ designs) or ebay.
If your caddy just needs a good clean drop it in a laundry sink filled with warm water and a couple of capfuls of Bosisto’s Eucalytptus Solution – this is a water soluble version of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil that’ll help dissolve any soap scum and kill germs and fungi.
