5 Second Rule no myth according to new research

If you’ve ever eyed off that piece of blueberry muffin you just dropped and wondered if it was salvageable, or picked up a vegemite sandwich off the floor and gave it back to your toddler – hide in shame no longer, because it turns out the ‘5 second rule’ is actually true.

Scientists this month proved that it does matter how long food is in contact with the floor and that food picked up just seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain harmful bacteria.

Researchers from Aston University in the UK monitored how quickly E.coli and other common bacteria spread from surfaces to food such as toast, pasta and sticky sweets, and found time was a significant factor in the transfer of germs.
But don’t get too relaxed about that rolled-away meatball, because they also warned that “Consuming food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk as it very much depends which bacteria are present on the floor at the time.”
According to housekeeping.com, floors in communal areas should generally be mopped at least once a week – more if there is high traffic.  Using a germ-killing natural essential oil such as eucalyptus or tea tree oil in your mop bucket can help kill harmful bacteria and help keep the home fresh and hygienic.  Essential oil Solutions such as Bosisto’s Solutions, which disperse in water, are also perfect for this purpose.
For other household surfaces, such as benchtops, kitchen sinks, doorknobs, telephones and children’s toys, a Eucalyptus Spray in an aerosol can is handy.  Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray has been proven to kill 99.99 percent of household germs, including E.Coli and Staphlioccous which can cause illness and are easily transmitted between family members.
A 100% pure Eucalyptus Spray is a natural alternative to chemical-packed surface disinfectants and a good alternative if your family sufferers from asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivities.  As a plus, eucalyptus oil and spray is safe to use on floors and surfaces where babies and toddlers play.
